In this article, we will cover the various ways you can utilize Cometly's email UTM parameters so that you can gather insights into how your email campaigns are performing within Cometly.

Installing the Cometly Email Parameters

To install the Cometly email parameters, you just need to append the the following URL parameter to all email links that you send out:

?comet_source=email

Example:

If you have an email with the following link in it:
http://www.cometly.com/demo

You would append the URL parameter like so:

http://www.cometly.com/demo?comet_source=email

Tracking Specific Email Campaigns & Emails

If you want to get more granular with your email reporting, you can add additional URL parameters to track the specific email or email broadcast/campaign such as

  • utm_campaign

  • utm_content

  • comet_custom

Example:

If you have an email with the following link in it:
http://www.cometly.com/demo

You would append the URL parameters like so:

http://www.cometly.com/demo?comet_source=email&utm_campaign=emailcampaign1&utm_content=email1

Does Cometly track email source without Cometly email parameters?

Yes.

In addition to using comet_source=email, Cometly can also automatically detect email traffic based on the referring domain.

When a contact clicks a link from a webmail client or email service, Cometly checks the referrer and will classify the visit as an Email touchpoint if it matches known email domains. This includes Gmail (mail.google.com), Yahoo Mail, Mailchimp (mailchi.mp), and other common webmail providers like Earthlink, Telstra, Spectrum, and Orange.

As a catch-all, any referrer containing "email." in the domain will also be classified as Email. This means that even without Cometly tracking parameters in the URL, clicks from webmail clients will still be attributed to the Email source automatically.

Email Reporting

When you are ready to report on your email campaigns, you will find that information via the Cometly Report Builder under the 'Email' source.

If you add the additional URL parameters we showcased above, you can pull reporting on your specific campaigns or emails by using the URL Parameters filter within the report builder.
