Transferring ownership of your Cometly account

Learn how to transfer ownership of your Cometly account.

Cometly lets you hand off ownership of a team (your account and everything in it) to a new owner. This is useful when an agency sets up Cometly on behalf of a client and later hands the account over, or when the person who set up Cometly leaves the company.

What moves to the new owner

When a transfer completes, the new owner receives:

  • The team itself and owner-level control over it

  • Every space in the team, with owner access on each

  • All connected ad accounts, pixels, integrations, events, dashboards, and reports

  • The subscription, plan, and billing (including the payment method currently on file)

Nothing is deleted or reset. All historical data stays exactly where it is.

What happens to the previous owner

The previous owner is not removed. They:

  • Stay on the team as a Team Admin

  • Keep admin access to the team's spaces

  • Get a new, empty personal team so they still have somewhere to log in to

  • Lose access to billing for the transferred team

The new owner can remove the previous owner from the team later under Team Settings → Members if they no longer need access.

Requirements

Before you start, check the following:

  1. You must be the team owner. Team Admins and members can't transfer ownership.

  2. The new owner's email must be brand new to Cometly. It can't already belong to an existing Cometly user, and it can't be your own email. The claim process creates a new account for that address.

  3. You can only own one team. If your login owns more than one team, the transfer is blocked. Contact support and we'll help you sort it out.

  4. Only one pending transfer at a time. If you already have a transfer waiting, cancel it before starting another.

How to transfer ownership

  1. Go to Team Settings.

  2. Scroll to Transfer ownership and click Transfer ownership.

  3. Confirm your password when prompted.

  4. Enter the new owner's email address and click Send transfer link.

That's it on your side. The new owner receives an email with the subject "You've been offered ownership of [Team Name] on Cometly."

While the transfer is pending, Team Settings shows a Ownership transfer pending banner. Click Cancel transfer at any time before the new owner claims it to call it off.

How the new owner claims the team

  1. Open the email and click Claim team ownership.

  2. Enter your name, choose a password, and accept the Terms of Service.

  3. Click Claim team ownership.

You'll be signed in immediately as the new owner and land on the team's dashboard.

The claim link expires after 72 hours. If it expires, the current owner just needs to start a new transfer.

After the transfer: update billing

The payment method on file moves to the new owner along with the subscription. If the previous owner's card was on the account, it will keep being charged until it's replaced.

The new owner should go to Billing right after claiming the team and add their own payment method.

Common questions

Can I transfer to someone who already has a Cometly account?
Not yet. The transfer creates a brand new account for the new owner, so the email can't already be in use. If the new owner already has a Cometly login, contact support and we'll help.

Will the previous owner still be able to see data?
Yes, as a Team Admin. If you want to remove them entirely, the new owner can do that under Team Settings → Members after the transfer completes.

Does anything change for other team members?
No. All other members, roles, and space access stay the same.

What if the new owner never clicks the link?
Nothing changes. The link expires after 72 hours and ownership stays with you. You can cancel or restart the transfer at any time.

I'm an agency. Can I set up an account for a client and hand it over later?
Yes, that's exactly what this is for. Set up the account under an email you control (one login per client is cleanest, since a login can only own one team when transferring), build everything out, then transfer to the client's email when you're ready. You'll stay on as a Team Admin unless the client removes you.
