Using the Event Log

Learn how to use the Cometly Event Log to monitor, verify, and troubleshoot server-based events in your account.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

The Cometly Event Log is a powerful tool that allows users to monitor, verify, and troubleshoot server events as they are received by Cometly. This article will guide you through how the Event Log works and its key functionalities.

What Is the Event Log For?

The Event Log is not designed for data analysis. Instead, it serves as a vital tool to ensure that events are properly sent to Cometly and contain accurate fields and data. If you send a test event to Cometly and need to confirm whether the event data was received correctly, the Event Log is where you can check.

Here’s what the Event Log is primarily used for:

  1. Verify Incoming Events: Confirm when a server event has been sent to Cometly and ensure the raw data is accurate.

  2. Troubleshoot Issues: Inspect detailed payload fields for each event to identify and resolve potential problems.

  3. Monitor Data Flow: Get a comprehensive view of all events received, including their success or error status.

Key Features of the Event Log

Important Note: If you set up a Cometly browser event, these will not appear in the Event Log. The Event Log is exclusively for server-based events, such as Direct Integrations and Webhooks.

Tabs: "Legacy" and "Webhooks"

The Event Log is divided into two main tabs, each providing unique insights:

  1. Legacy Tab:

    • Displays data for all legacy integrations in Cometly.

    • Key information available:

      • Datetime: When the event was received.

      • Event Name: The name of the event.

      • Status: Whether the event was successful or had an error.

      • Integration: The specific integration source for the event.

  2. Webhooks Tab:

    • Shows the Event Log for all webhook events coming into Cometly.

    • Key information available:

      • Datetime: When the event was received.

      • Name/Description: A detailed description of the event.

      • Status: Whether the event was successful or had an error.

Status Indicators

  • Success: Indicates that the event has been received and processed without issues.

  • Error: Indicates that there was an issue with the event. Users can view specific error messages to troubleshoot the problem.

Viewing Event Details

Note on Data Visibility: When an event is sent to Cometly, it can take up to 15 minutes for it to appear in the reporting areas, such as the Report Builder or Ads Manager. However, the event will show in the Event Log within 60 seconds, allowing you to quickly verify its successful receipt and troubleshoot if needed.

For each event, users can expand the row to view the raw payload data. This includes all the fields sent with the event, allowing you to:

  • Verify the accuracy of the data.

  • Check if all required fields were included.

  • Diagnose and fix any data inconsistencies or errors.

How to Use the Event Log for Troubleshooting

  1. Locate the Event:

    • Navigate to the appropriate tab (Legacy or Webhooks) based on the type of event you're investigating.

    • Scroll to find the specific event.

  2. Check the Status:

    • Look at the Status column to determine if the event was successful or encountered an error.

  3. View the Payload:

    • Click to expand the event row and inspect the raw data payload. Ensure all fields are correct and formatted as expected.

  4. Address Errors:

    • If the event status shows an error, review the error message provided. This will help you pinpoint the issue and take corrective action.

Why the Event Log Is Essential

The Event Log is an invaluable resource for maintaining the integrity of your data and ensuring the smooth operation of your integrations. By providing visibility into every piece of raw data coming into your Cometly account, it empowers you to:

  • Quickly identify and resolve issues.

  • Ensure accurate data tracking for reporting and analysis.
