Connecting Microsoft Ads When Your Account Uses Google Sign-In (SSO)

If you signed up for Microsoft Ads using Google Sign-In and can't connect your Cometly account.

Updated today

If you signed up for Microsoft Advertising using Google Sign-In (or another third-party login like GoDaddy), you may run into trouble when connecting your account to Cometly. This guide walks you through how to fix it.

If instead you're seeing a "Need admin approval" message, that's a different issue. Check out our Microsoft Advertising Connection Troubleshooting article for that one.

Why Google Sign-In Causes This Problem

When you click "Sign in with Microsoft" in Cometly, it kicks off a standard Microsoft login process (called OAuth). This process requires your account to be registered in Microsoft's identity system called Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory).

When you sign up for Microsoft Ads using your Google account, Microsoft creates your ad account, but your identity lives with Google, not with Microsoft Entra ID. So when Cometly asks Microsoft to authenticate you, Microsoft doesn't have the credentials it needs to complete the connection, and it fails.

This is a Microsoft account setup issue, not a Cometly bug. The fix is getting your identity registered on the Microsoft side.

⚠️ Important: Simply creating a new Microsoft account or logging into ads. microsoft. com first won't fix this on its own. The account you connect with must be registered in Azure. The good news is it's free and only takes a few minutes.

How to Fix It

Step 1: Invite Yourself as a New Admin in Microsoft Ads

  1. Sign in to Microsoft Ads at ads.microsoft.com using your usual Google sign-in

  2. Go to Tools > Account Access

  3. Click Invite User

  4. Enter a different email address (this can be any email you have access to)

  5. Set the role to Super Admin

  6. Send the invite

Step 2: Accept the Invite and Create Your Microsoft Login

  1. Go to your inbox and open the invitation email from Microsoft Ads

  2. Click to accept the invite

  3. Microsoft will prompt you to create a Microsoft account if you don't already have one tied to that email. Follow the prompts to set up a username and password.

Step 3: Register in Azure

  1. Sign in with the Microsoft login you just created

  2. Complete the free Azure account setup

  3. Navigate to Microsoft Entra ID (direct link) and confirm your account is registered

⚠️ Important: Without this step, the connection will still fail. Azure registration is what makes it work.

Step 4: Connect in Cometly

  1. In the same browser, make sure you're signed in to Microsoft Ads at ads. microsoft.com with your new Microsoft login

  2. Without closing that browser, go to Cometly and navigate to Integrations > Microsoft > Sign in with Microsoft

  3. Microsoft should detect your active session and prompt you to authorize access without needing to sign in again

πŸ’‘ Tip: Make sure you're using the same browser for both Microsoft Ads and Cometly. Microsoft uses your active session to complete the connection.
