How to drop data-center traffic from your page views

If bots are inflating your page views, you can tell Cometly to ignore traffic that comes from cloud and hosting providers. The setting is called Drop data-center traffic, it is off by default, and you turn it on per space from the Traffic Permissions page

What the setting does

When it is on, Cometly discards page views that come from data-center IP addresses before they are counted. Most bot traffic runs on servers rented from cloud and hosting providers, so this removes the bulk of it.

  • Dropped page views are not stored, attributed or billed. They never reach your reports, customer journeys or usage.

  • It only applies to traffic tracked by the Cometly pixel on your site. Events sent by webhook, API or integrations are never dropped.

  • It works from the moment you turn it on. Page views already recorded stay as they are.

  • It is set per space. If you have several spaces, turn it on in each one that needs it.

When to turn it on

Turn it on only when bot traffic is a real problem for the space. Common signs:

  • The page views Cometly counts are far higher than the traffic your site analytics show.

  • Page views jumped suddenly with no change in your campaigns, content or site.

  • Your page view usage is pushing you into overage, and the extra traffic does not turn into leads or sales.

Not sure? Contact our support team before you turn it on. We can check where your page views come from and tell you whether this setting will help.

Before you turn it on

Some real visitors also browse through data-center addresses, so turning this on drops part of your real traffic too. Depending on your site and audience, page views and attributions can drop by about 5 to 15%.

The visitors most likely to be affected:

  • People using iCloud Private Relay, common on iPhone and Safari.

  • People using Cloudflare WARP or a VPN.

  • People browsing from a corporate network proxy.

Sites with a lot of mobile traffic tend to see a bigger drop. That is why the setting is off by default.

How to turn it on

You need permission to manage domains in the space.

  1. Go to Traffic Permissions at app.cometly.com/domains. All settings on this page apply only to the current space.

  2. Find the Drop data-center traffic card at the top. It shows Off by default.

  1. Click the toggle so it shows On.

To turn it off, click the toggle again. Page views that arrive after that are counted as usual; page views dropped while it was on are not recovered.

FAQ

Will this lower my page view usage?

Yes, from the moment you turn it on. Dropped page views are not billed. It does not change usage already counted; if you think past usage was inflated by bots, contact support.

Does it affect conversions I send by webhook, API or an integration?

No. Only traffic tracked by the Cometly pixel can be dropped.

Will it stop all bots?

No. It removes traffic from data-center addresses, which is where most bots run. Bots that use home or mobile connections can still get through. If you still see unusual traffic, contact support.

Can I turn it on for some domains only?

No. The setting covers the whole space and every domain tracked in it.
